Spring Gala 2019
April 6, 2019
Guest Speaker: Rod Dreher– a writer and veteran journalist whose work focuses on religion and culture, has been called “one of America’s most influential religious commentators” by The Economist. His most recent book, The Benedict Option: A Strategy For Christians In A Post-Christian Nation, was a New York Times bestseller, and has appeared in 11 languages. David Brooks of the New York Times called it “the most important religious book of the decade.” The book draws on the teachings of St. Benedict of Nursia as a source of guidance for believers struggling to hold on to faith and pass it to their children in an increasingly hostile world. Father Cassian Folsom, a Benedictine monk of Norcia, says that Christians who hope to make it through the trials to come with their faith intact must take some form of the Benedict Option. Dreher‘s earlier books are How Dante Can Save Your Life (2015), The Little Way of Ruthie Leming (2013), and Crunchy Cons (2006). He is an Eastern Orthodox Christian who lives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with his three children and his wife Julie, who teaches in the same classical Christian school where their kids are educated.

“St. Benedict Elementary…invite[s] the Culture of Me to discover the riches of a culture of knowledge, a culture of encounter, a culture of noble aspiration, a culture of compassion and service: a culture at the center of which is not self-assertion but self-gift. This is a very important project. It deserves all the support we can give it.”
